Dorchester South Beryl Bike Parklet

March 2025

Purbeck Community Rail Partnership in collaboration with South Western Railway and Dorset Council has installed a Beryl Bike Parklet recently installed at Dorchester South Station. We would like to thank Community Rail Network and the DfT for their support and grant aid to make this project possible. Parklets are an enhancement to storage locations for bikes, they have an attractive planted addition to make the station more aesthetically pleasing, greener and more environmentally friendly and signage for ease of use. These added extras help make the station environment more welcoming and attractive for all users of the station.

This promotes sustainable integrated travel by selling the benefits of using public transport involving train and cycling. This e-bike programme, currently rolled out across Weymouth and Dorchester has been initiated by Dorset Council who have funded the scheme. We are adding to this offer by creating a physical environmentally attractive hub for the bikes to encourage greater usage. The e-bikes are a fun, easy and versatile way to travel and their extra power can really open up areas, enabling riders to tackle hills and undertake longer journeys. They are also great for commuting, helping to reduce physical exertion and allowing people to arrive at work clean and ready to go. This fits in with active travel plans the local authority are pursuing around the County. By encouraging more people to use these bikes, we can hopefully contribute even more towards reducing traffic congestion while improving air quality and public health.
