The long-awaited rail link between Wareham and Swanage will be operating between April and September 2023. You will now be able to travel all the way to Swanage by train from anywhere on the mainline network taking in the experience of travelling on this unique heritage railway arriving in a more relaxed way.
Leave your car at home and travel by rail is the message from the Swanage Railway which is to operate a trial heritage diesel train service from the main line at Wareham into the heart of the Isle of Purbeck thanks to working in partnership with the many stakeholders.
Operating from April to September, 2023, tickets for the service will also be available from main line train operating company South Western Railway at the end of April so its passengers can add tickets for Corfe Castle and Swanage to their main line tickets.
The trial service will operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 4 April to 10 September, 2023, with the first train departing Wareham at 11.19am and the last train leaving Swanage for Wareham at 4.20pm – giving visitors the opportunity to spend four hours in Swanage or Corfe Castle. The timetable is subject to change on special event days.
This is not just about a scenic railway for visitors to the county, but a sustainable form of transport with links for ongoing travel that can be used by everyone on a regular basis. There is a great appeal for nostalgia and the sense of adventure it brings and lasting impression it leaves.
This is a great way to travel to Corfe Castle and Swanage taking in the picturesque Dorset countryside and avoiding the congestion on the roads especially during the main tourist season.
We hope this venture is supported so it can become a permanent service and economically viable. We thank all the hard work many people have put into this service to make it happen, especially the many volunteers involved in the Swanage Railway.
